Dhund (tribe)





Dhunds (also known as Dhund Abbasis) are found chiefly in the Murree, Rawalpindi, Abbottabad, Hazara in Pakistan and also in the Bagh and Muzaffarabad districts of Azad Kashmir.



Origin


They mainly speak Punjabi or Pahari dialects, as well as Hindko.[1] According to Ahmad Hasan Dani, Dhund were originally an offshoot of the older Karlal tribe and they eventually adopted the name 'Dhund-Abbasi' to reflect their conversion to Islam at the hands of one Syed Abbas Shah Gilani, during the 12th-13th centuries.[2]
