所谓盎格鲁-诺曼语（Anglo-Norman），指的是在诺曼征服英格兰之后，在英格兰等不列颠群岛地区使用的古诺曼语。[1]它由诺曼底公爵威廉及其部下带到英格兰，它实际上是当时征服者所讲的诺曼底方言、法国西部和北部的奥依语、法国西部的皮卡尔语等等在英格兰的条件下混杂而成的一门语言。盎格鲁-诺曼语作为英格兰的上层社会文学和行政语言，一直从12世纪延续到15世纪，这期间对古英语发展为中古英语起到了至关重要的作用。英语虽然没有最终被盎格鲁-诺曼语取代而成为死语，但它在接触过程中借用了非常多的后者的词汇，使得在词汇方面古英语和中古英语的固有词很多无法沿用下去，而与同为日耳曼语的德语和荷兰语形成对比。盎格鲁-诺尔曼语在语法上对英语的影响不很显著，但有些固定词组的修饰语置后的语序上仍可见到盎格鲁-诺尔曼语的痕迹，如：attorney general（检察长）。[2]
