Girifalco is a comune and town in the province of Catanzaro in the Calabria region of southern Italy.
History
According to the newspaper "La Tribuna illustrata", Girifalco was born from the destruction of two ancient villages, Toco and Caria, during the Saracen invasions in 836 a.C. Residents fled to a cliff, which later called "Stone of the Monks" and rejected the Saracens throwing down the mountain stones. Those brave were called "Sacra Falange" (Hiere Phalanx) and from this name in Greek the name Girifalco was born.
A minute of 1845 records a lodge called Fidelitas being founded at Girifalco in Calabria in 1723. In spite of the lack of earlier records, this is often cited as the first Masonic Lodge in Italy.[3]
