愛爾蘭首次參與夏季奥林匹克运动会自1924年和冬季奥林匹克运动会自1992年。愛爾蘭奧林匹克議會 (OCI)成立於1922年[1]在爱尔兰自由邦成立前的臨時管理（英语：Provisional Government of the Irish Free State）時期。OCI附屬於国际奥林匹克委员会 (IOC)在巴黎賽事。[1]這個隊伍的爭議在於是代表爱尔兰共和国還是整個爱尔兰岛，包含共和國與北爱尔兰。[2]

  • 雖然Michelle Smith de Bruin（英语：Michelle Smith de Bruin）在1998年違反規定而被禁賽，但未影響她1996年獎牌。[4]Cian O'Connor（英语：Cian O'Connor）獲得2004年個人障礙（英语：Equestrian at the 2004 Summer Olympics – Individual jumping）金牌，但在2005年7月未過賽後藥檢而取消。[5]


  • Robert Heffernan（英语：Robert Heffernan）原本為第四名，當時冠軍為男子50公里競走Sergey Kirdyapkin（英语：Sergey Kirdyapkin）[6]2016年3月24日，国际体育仲裁院取消Kirdyapkin的2009年8月20日至2012年8月15日的成績。[7]預計國際田聯和國際奧委會將正式取消Kirdyapkin的資格，於是Heffernan將獲得銅牌。[8]
