Bagalkot, or Bagalakote, is a city in the state of Karnataka, India, which is also the headquarters of Bagalkote district. it is situated on branch of River Ghataprabha about 530 km (329 mi) northwest of state capital Bangalore, 410 km (255 mi) southwest of Hyderabad, and about 570 km (354 mi) southeast of Mumbai. The population of the urban agglomeration was 1,11,933[2] according to the provisional results of 2011 national census of India, and the city is spread over an area of 49.06 square kilometres (18.94 sq mi)[2] with an average elevation of 532 m above MSL.

History
Existence of the city
According to stone inscriptions in the surrounding area, the town's name was formerly Bagadige. According to legend, the town was given to the Bhajantries (musicians) by Ravana, the king of Lanka who ruled this area. One of the Bijapur kings is said to have presented the town to his daughter as bangle money (a tradition in which the daughter is given money to buy bangles, sarees, gold ornaments from her parents after the marriage).
Rulers
Bagalakote remained under successive dominions of Vijayanagar emperors, Peshwas, Kingdom of Mysore, Maratha rulers, and finally the British in 1818. In 1865, it was established as a municipality and civic amenities were provided to the residents of Bagalakote.
As part of the independence movement
The place was a noted centre of the Indian independence movement and the Unification movement. Revolutionary Sindhoora Laxmana lived in Kadalimatti and Bilagi mountain ranges.
Geography
Bagalakote is located at 16°11′N 75°42′E / 16.18°N 75.7°E / 16.18; 75.7.[3] It has an average elevation of 533 metres (1,749 ft). It is situated on the bank of the river Ghataprabha.
Demographics
As of the 2001 Indian census[update],[4] Bagalkot had a population of 112,068 with males constituting 52% of the population and females 48%. Bagalkot had an average literacy rate of 85.4%, higher than the national average of 59.5%, with 91.73% of the males and 79.04% of females literate. 12% of the population was under 6 years of age.[5]Kannada is the major language spoken here.
