Tasmania Zoo is a zoo located in Launceston, in the Australian state of Tasmania.


Situated on 900 acres (360 ha) of old growth native bushland, it is home to the state's largest collection of native and exotic animals. Exhibits include Tasmanian devils, wombats, quolls, emus, koalas, kangaroos, deer, reptiles and monkeys, along with a collection of 80 bird species. Conservation work carried out by the zoo includes a breeding program for Tasmanian devils.[1]

Attractions


Features including feeding Tasmanian devils, meerkats and penguins, 7 days a week. Kiosk and gift shop open 9-4 pm daily. Animal feeding food available for purchase. The zoo is available for parties and private events.[2]

Intrusion


On 2 August 2012, an intrusion occurred at the zoo. The entrances to about 30 enclosures were flung open. Dozens of animals escaped, some endangered. The intruders also killed about a dozen birds, including a Tasmanian swift parrot, fewer than 1,000 of which remain in the wild.[3]
