Background Information

Charles Barkley was the main host of the event. During a break in the game near the fourth quarter he even wanted to shoot himself out of a catapult, but his coach made sure he didn't do it because he did not want his star player to get injured.[1]

Grant Hill of the Detroit Pistons was the first rookie in NBA history to lead the league in votes for this year's All-Star game.[2]

Hakeem Olajuwon led the Western conference in all star voting.[3]

Karl Malone and David Robinson were both questionable for the game due to injuries but they ended up playing with slightly limited minutes.[4]

Dominique Wilkins and Clyde Drexler both missed this year's All-Star game which came as a surprise because they have been perennial all-stars in the past.[5]

Larry Johnson came back to the all-star lineup after missing last years game due to a serious back injury. It meant a lot for him to come back from the injury and make the all-star game the next season. He came back as a reserve this year.[6]

Penny Hardaway -who would go on to become an NBA legend- played his first game as a starter for the Eastern conference team this year.[7]

Cedric Ceballos was selected for the all-star team, but Dikembe Mutombo had inadvertently injured him in a regular season game prior to the all-star game. Mutombo then went on to replace Ceballos as a reserve on the all-star team since Ceballos was injured. However, Ceballos' name was still kept on the roster even though he did not play in the game.[8]

Michael Jordan missed this all-star game because this was his first retirement from basketball since he wanted to pursue a career in professional baseball.[9]
