The Toronto subway is the system of four underground, surface, and elevated rapid transit lines in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, operated by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). It was the country's first subway system: the first line was built under Yonge Street with a short stretch along Front Street, which opened in 1954 with 12 stations. Since then, the system has expanded to become Canada's largest (in terms of number of stations) and second busiest rapid transit rail network with an average of 915,000 passenger trips each weekday recorded during the fourth quarter of 2017.^[1] There are a total of 75 operating stations with an additional 22 under construction.

Description

The subway system encompasses four lines (including Line 3, a light metro line) and 75 stations on 76.9 kilometres (47.8 mi) of route.^[2]Line 5 Eglinton, a 25-station, 19-kilometre (12 mi) light rail transit (LRT) line, is under construction and scheduled to open in 2021.^[3] In addition, construction will begin in 2019 on the Line 6 Finch West, with 17 new stops on 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) of track, with 2023 as the expected completion date.^{[4][citation needed]}
