Mulund is a suburb in the north-east of Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It is also a railway station on the Central Railway line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway. It is nestled alongside the foothills of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park with easy access to the Eastern Express Highway and Navi Mumbai through the Mulund-Airoli Bridge. Mulund marks the end of Mumbai city.[6][7]

History


Historical records of Mulund date back to the time of Mauryan empire ruled by Prathestha Misr[according to whom?], the governor appointed by Emperor Chandragupta Maurya.[citation needed] Mulund is the earliest planned neighborhood of Mumbai city.[citation needed] A gridiron plan was designed by architects Crown & Carter in 1922, which extends from present day Mulund railway station to Paanch Rasta road Junction in Mulund (West).[citation needed]



Economy


Mulund is home to a mix of large number of industrial factories along present day L.B.S. road, some of which are the pharmaceutical companies - Hoechst, Wellcome, Glaxo and Johnson & Johnson. Several engineering companies were also located in the, but have eventually shifted out of Mulund. Their locations have been converted to shopping malls and residential apartment complexes altering the landscape and skyline. Johnson and Johnson factory still remains one of the avant garde modern architectural landmarks of Mulund.[citation needed]


L.B.S. Road which today is lined with two shopping malls, R-Mall and Nirmal Lifestyle.[citation needed]



Entertainment




Kalidas Hall, Mulund


Mulund has 4 major cinema halls, Carnival Cinemas (at R-Mall),Mehul theaters and PVR (at Nirmal Lifestyles). Mahakavi Kalidas, is the only auditorium in Mulund which regularly hosts Marathi, Gujarati and Hindi plays apart from musical shows.[citation needed]

Mulund Station falls on the central line of Mumbai railway. Mulund is well connected to other suburbs and other cities as well by adequate network of trains, BEST buses and roads including a national highway. Mulund is a stop for slow local trains as well as semi-fast local trains on the central line of the Mumbai suburban network. Metro IV which is currently under construction will pass through Mulund's L.B.S. Road.[citation needed]
